google mapquest driving directions

June 30th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Niche Store Builders

When I find something I like, I always want to tell as many of my friends, family members, acquaintances and anyone else who will listen about it. My latest find is EZ Driving Directions. I stumbled across this great and helpful site when I was trying to decide between google mapquest driving directions. I found all kinds of helpful information about free online direction sites there. In fact, I found out some things I did not even know such as that google offers 3D maps as part of their service options. I went there and looked up a route from my home to my office just for fun.

Over the years I have used different websites and different programs for my travel needs but I have not been able to depend on one in particular. It seems that one site is great for one thing but another site is great for another. I am now tempted to give maps google a try and see if that website can not accommodate all of my needs on one website instead of having to go to different locations to map out my trips, my short distance drives and even book some travel plans other then mapping. I am anxious to use the site.

There have been a few times where I have gotten directions online and they just didn’t make sense.  However, when it comes to yahoo maps I have never been led to the wrong destination.  They just don’t ever seen to be fooled by construction, or names changes with roads.  There have even been a few times where i’ve seen the directions change within a matter of days of taking the same route.  They seem to do a much better job keeping their systems up to date with what is going on out there in the real world of mapping software.

Good Web Design Practices

June 30th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Niche Store Builders

Your website is where your business resides, it’s like the headquarter of an offline company. It is therefore important to follow good web design principles to make sure that you attract and retain the maximum number of people to your site.

The navigation menu should be clearly marked so that visitors know how to navigate around your website without confusion.

Reduce the number of images on your website or at least optimize the images that you have on your site, so that they do not cause your website to load slowly. Optimizing images mean that you must reduce their size without losing the image quality.

Keep your text paragraphs short and do make use of bullet points to illustrate certain principles. Make sure that you use a bold font for the headings of paragraphs so that these will catch the eye. It has been proven that people tend to scan websites for information rather than read every word, and using headlines in a bold font will catch their attention and draw them into the paragraph.

Make sure that your website complies to web standards and is compatible with all browsers. The most popular browsers are Internet Explorer and Firefox and your website must at least be compatible with these two browsers. A professional web design company spends a lot of their time making sure that the site performs equally well in both of these browsers.

Make sure that your website is hosted by a reputable hosting company, since the last thing that you want is that your site is down when prospective visitors come by. Rather pay the little bit extra each month to make sure that your site is not hosted by a fly-by-night company.

Making Customer Satisfaction Surveys Work

June 29th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Niche Store Builders

Why bother?

Good customer service is the life blood of any business. Although new customers are very important good customer service will help generate customer loyalty and repeat business. With every satisfied customer your business is likely to go on and secure many more customers through recommendations and if you do not take proper care of your customers there is probably a competitor waiting in the wings that will.

A Customer Satisfaction survey will help you not only identify problem areas but will also demonstrate to your customers that you care and are proactive in looking for ways to improve the service that you provide.

Where do you start?

Objective – Before you start compiling your survey you should first consider what the objectives of the survey are, in that way you will remain focused and find it easier to decide what questions to ask.

Analysis – Once the survey has been completed consider how you will analyse the answers.

Bare in mind that ‘closed’ questions (where the respondents are asked to choose from a limited number of responses) are easier to analyse than questions that are ‘open’ (where the respondent can reply in anyway they want).

A lot will depend on the likely volume of respondents, the higher the volume the more important it is to have an easy method of analysing the results.

Opportunity – Keep in mind that as well as obtaining valuable market research data customer surveys are also a good way to publicise aspects of your service that your customers may not be aware of.

After you have drafted your survey read through the survey from a market research view point and check that you are asking the right questions in the right way and that with the feedback information you will be able to make informed decisions.

Next, read through the survey from a marketing view point, check that you have phrased each question so that every opportunity has been taken to promote your business?

The ideal question will perform the following three functions:-

  • Market research – provide valuable feedback to help you improve your customer satisfaction levels and in turn your business
  • Marketing – promote aspects of your business
  • Information/Education – advertise a service that you provide that your customers may not have been unaware of

For example:- Do you find the in-store baby changing facilities useful?

By asking this question not only will the store receive good market research feedback on the facility they provide but they will also promote their facilities and advertise themselves as a family friendly store, even beyond those customers who have a specific need for the baby changing facility that has been provided.

Warts and all – to benefit most from a customer survey you need to be prepared to dig deep and accept the worst.

A customer satisfaction survey should be designed to highlight problems so that they can be addressed; regular customer satisfaction will prevent complacency and will also give early warning on where your competitors initiatives may be losing you business.

What questions should you ask?

Although it is a given that each business is likely to have specific and unique factors that are important in providing good customer services there are common areas that are relevant to all businesses be they a physical store, online internet store or a service industry. The following are key areas to providing good customer service.

Communication – Are you confident that you make it easy for your customers to communicate with you?

When a customer telephones is their call answered promptly; are enquiries about products or services handled properly? A good business will make every effort to ensure that whatever the customers query it is resolved by the right person, politely, quickly and fairly.

If there are reported problems that cannot be resolvable immediately do you promise to respond in a given time period and do you deliver on your promise?

Use a customer satisfaction survey to confirm that all your staff are perceived by your customers as being helpful, courteous and knowledgeable.

Location – Do your customers find it easy to visit you, if a physical bricks and mortar store, is it conveniently located with good access?

Making it pleasant, making it easy – For an internet business it is important to ensure that your website is easy to use and aesthetically pleasing.

Regardless of the store being a bricks and mortar or purely an online internet store, is the store properly laid out, can your customers find what they need and is there sufficient information and help on hand to explain how a particular product works?

The right quality products – In addition to measuring the quality of the service that you provide you should ensure that the products and services that you provide do in fact match your customers’ requirements.

Value for money – Cheap or expensive is rarely a good measure, value for money is.

Do your customers equate your business with value for money, if not, why not?

Speed and attention – Customers want to be dealt with quickly but attentively.

Are you doing everything to prevent any delays?

Good businesses will try to treat each customer as an individual, does yours? Attention is important but so is a quick and satisfactory resolution of the query.

Demographics and Specific issues – Take the opportunity to profile your customers, for example their gender, age group and where they live?

The more knowledge you have of your customers the more information you will have to better target your business.

Encourage customers to highlight their specific problems and provide contact details so that their concerns can be followed up.

What next?

Having completed the survey analyse the results.

Trends – Identify specific and common areas where the service needs improving.

Ask yourself if any criticism is valid, be honest to yourself, is there anything that can be done to properly resolve, or at the very least, minimise the problem?

Training – Are the staff properly trained and do they have sufficient knowledge?

Where staff training programmes have been implemented have they had a positive impact on the business?

Follow-up – If a customer who has completed a survey has raised a specific issue ensure that they are contacted and their complaint addressed.

Do not lose the opportunity to resolve a problem and keep a customer.

Continuously Monitor – Based on the survey results make changes and then re-measure by issuing further surveys.

If you are concerned about customer satisfaction and would like to view a sample survey for a store that will demonstrate some of the above advice please view the Sample Customer Survey

Property in Javea and Properties in Javea

June 28th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Niche Store Builders

Javea is a coastal town, in the province of Alicante. It sits behind a bay between two rocky headlands, Cabo San Antonio and Cabo La Nao. Surrounded by orange, lemon and olive groves. The town is dominated by the Montgo peak, 753 metres high, declared a Natural Park in 1997.

Montgo protects Javea from harsh north winds and it enjoys a micro-climate said to be one of the healthiest in the world. There are more recorded hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Spain making it popular with tourists and ex-pats alike. There is a population of about 32,000 people which swells to around 100,000 in the summer months, making properties in Javea very desireable

Javea lies midway between the cities of Alicante and Valencia, which both have international airports and has good road connections to both via the N332 A road or the A7 motorway. There is also a regular bus service to the two cities as well as a daily service to Madrid. The nearest railway station is Gata de Gorgos, a ten minute drive away, with a regular service to Alicante.

Property in Javea can be split into three distinct parts:
The Old Town, once a walled and fortified town to protect it from pirates, stone crosses now mark the original gates in three locations. In the centre of the town is the impressive church of Sant Bartolome which dates back to the 14th century although some of the structure may go back as far as the 11th century. The church suffered significant damage during the Spanish Civil War and shell and bullet holes can still be seen in some walls today.

There is an indoor market built in 1946 selling fruit, vegetables, meat and locally caught fish.
There is also a local museum, “Museo Historico y Etnografico Municipal J.B.Soler Blasco Javea”, which shows the history of Javea and can be visited between the hours of 10.00-13.00 and 17.00-20.00 and 10.00-13.00 weekends and bank holidays, but it is closed on Mondays.

The Port: popular with tourists due to its bars, restaurants, safe gravel beach and marina. The first jetty was built in 1871 and was important in the export of raisins. When the raisin trade collapsed at the end of the 19th century it became a fishing harbour which is how it remains today. There is also the landmark church “Nuestra Señora de Loreto” built in 1967, in the shape of a fishing boat going through the waves.

The Arenal:a wide beach of white sand with a promenade, bars and restaurants. There is an outdoor craft market during the summer as well as sand artists and street entertainers. There is also a Parador Hotel behind which once stood the “Punta del Arenal” a Roman settlement. On the other end of the bay once stood the Fontana Castle whose canons can still be seen outside the Sant Bartolome church in the old town.

Market day is on Thursday except when it is a bank holiday. There are many multinational and multilingual businesses some of which offer javea properties at exceptional prices. There are three local fiestas, San Juan in June, Moors and Christians in July and Nuestra Señora de Loreto in September. There is a large range of rental centres and shops catering to a wide range of activities including cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse riding, sailing and hiking.

From Benjamin Franklin to Rimless Bifocal Shades

June 28th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Niche Store Builders

The American gentleman of scientific discipline, Benjamin Franklin, who persevered both myopia as well as presbyopia, invented bifocals in 1784 to obviate having to frequently alternate betwixt two pairs of glasses.

The 1st lenses for repairing astigmia were constructed by the British astronomer George Airy within 1825.

Along the history of bifocal glasses, the building of spectacle frames also developed. Early on oculars were contrived to be either held in place with hand or by maintaining force on the nose. Girolamo Savonarola advised that oculars could be held in place with a ribbon passed over the subject’s head, this in turn fastened by the weight of a hat.

Entering modern bifocal history, the contemporary fashion of bifocals supported by temples passing over the ears, was produced in 1727 by the British lens maker Edward Scarlett. These designs were not at once prosperous, however, and assorted styles with attached handles like “scissors-glasses” and lorgnettes stayed fashionable throughout the eighteenth and into the early nineteenth century.

In the early twentieth century, Moritz von Rohr at Zeiss made the Zeiss Punktal spherical point-focus lens system which controlled the eyeglass lens domain for several years.

Despite the improving fame of contacts and laser restorative eye surgery, eyeglasses remain quite popular, as their technology has continued to evolve. For example, it’s currently possible to buy frames constituted of special memory metal alloys that return to their correct configuration after being bent. Other frames have spring-loaded hinges.

Glasses have come a long way, haven’t they? In fact, today you can even buy sunglass bifocals.

Most of these designs are also distinctly better able to resist the stresses of day-to-day wear as well as the periodic accident. Contemporary frames are also ofttimes constructed from substantial, light-weight materials like titanium alloys which were not available in earlier days.

Keeping Horses Content This Winter

June 27th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Niche Store Builders

The thermometer is starting to plummet and the snow is forecasted for the end of the week so it’s time to take the last steps of preparing for a winter turnout. Horses are made to withstand cold weather and do quite well in 20F weather. It has been shown that horses are healthiest when they are outside for at least part of the day in comparison to being kept in the padlock all winter long.

There are a few things that do change during the winter season to make allowances for the colder weather.

Make sure that water is always available. When the temperatures dip down ice can form on the water troughs. If this is an ongoing problem where you live then an investment in a water heater or an automatic pasture waterer will do the trick. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on how much they drink, since although they require water, their thirst drops off in the winter.

A shelter is important on cold windy days. A roof with 3 sides is the best because it covers every angle the wind can come in except the front. It looks like an oversized bus shelter. It’s essential to remember that horses will require more food during the winter months. This is because it requires more energy to stay warm. Increase the amount of hay. Since it takes longer to break down, hay endures longer which in turn provides more long term heat.

Supplements are also a high priority in the cold season. A very effective supplement is TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials. It supports the equine immune system with superior antioxidant activity as well as promotes proper feed digestion and nutrient absorption. The cold winter air tends to dry out hair and skin but the TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials combats this. If you have a horse with joint problems there is a sister product called TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials FlexTM that has had great results.

Here is a tip for beautiful sunny days when the light is reflecting that it is almost blinding. Use the fly masks. It cuts the glare. They are also handy on really windy days especially if your horse has ever had problems with his eyes.

You have to admit there is something beautiful about horses running in the snow.
