Focus on the Duck Decoy After You Learn These Skills

Duck hunters just love to assemble an impressive collection of duck decoys. While this is a fine idea in many ways, the duck decoy, being a tried and true hunting tool, is not necessarily going to make you a better hunter.  In fact, overzealous hunters often throw hundreds of dollars and countless man hours into the procurement or sculpting of the decoys. Instead, they should be focusing on far more critical aspects of the sport, specifically: location choice, duck calls, and marksmanship.

The location of your hunt is far and above the most important factor in your success.  Your duck decoys may be awesome and detailed, but they will do you absolutely no good if you’re one-hundred miles away from the nearest flock of ducks.  It’s always best to know your location, the times when the most fowl come in, and where the prime shooting location will be before you ever think about a decoy.

Similarly, your choice of calls, specifically when to call and which calls suit you best, will be absolutely pivotal to your success in the field. Over calling or, conversely, under calling can make or break you in the field, making your decoys absolutely worthless.  Always take care to work the duck in a very careful, premeditated way as to not spook them from landing, the worst possible outcome you can run into when on a long awaited hunt.

Lastly, you absolutely must develop your marksmanship skills and knowledge.  Understand where to fire and when to fire and you will pull down double the game you could hope to harvest while shooting blindly into the sky.  Lead them right, and you should have no trouble taking your fair share of fowl during the season.

In summary, hold off on the decoys and master marksmanship, calling skill, and reconnaissance. Once you have those down, your quest for the perfect duck decoy will be even more satisfying.
